VLI is a inline or standalone machine for the inspection of glass medical vials.

The process involves 13 cameras divided into 7 analysis station for glass and level analysis, bottom analysis and contents analysis.

This allows a total control of the body of the vial, of cosmetic defects, of the closures (cap and flip-off) and of the powder contents.

  

 

   

   

  

MACHINE FUNCTION

 

Handling

  • The vials enter the machine from a conveyor belt or a storage plenum, and are separated and timed by a star-shaped device.
  • The control automatically sets the motor rotation speeds according to the dimensions of the vial, so that one full 360° rotation coincides with the analysis area of each camera, ensuring the entire surface is filmed regardless of their size.
  • At the same time the vials are subjected to micro-vibrations that level the powder inside and enable the level check to be performed.

 

Grippers and easy changeover

  • The vials are gripped by a series of grippers that lift and turn them again through 360° so that the subsequent stations can check the lower part and the bottom.
  • VLI was designed to inspect different sized vials with very short set-up times.
  • Self-adapting grippers enable 10 to 100 ml vials to be handled without making any adjustments.

 

Cameras and lighting

  • The process involves 13 cameras divided into 7 analysis stations.
  • The cameras acquire images of the rotating or sliding vials in such a way that all the entire surface area can be analyzed and all possible defects can be detected.
  • The rotation speed is set automatically according to the dimensions of the vial, so that one full 360° rotation coincides with the analysis area of each camera, ensuring the entire surface is filmed.
  • The high resolution of the cameras and optics used allows tiny defects (less than one square millimeter) to be identified, while sophisticated analysis algorithms minimize false rejections even in conditions of maximum sensitivity.
  • Several light sources and different lighting techniques (direct light and back light) enable the identification of all the defects that can be hidden in the glass, such as cracks, chips or impurities. The same cameras detect if the closure is damaged (missing flip-off, dents).
  • Vials found to be defective following the analysis are sent to a rejection station.

ADVANCED HMI OPERATOR PANEL

  • Advanced HMI and maximum ease of use with a windows-like interface
  • All the machine control functions are located in a single touch-screen panel. New formats are programmed rapidly using a set-up wizard. Access is protected by up to 5 levels of passwords with different rights for each, while CFR 21 Audit Trail Reports can be printed on a laser printer built into the machine.
  • From the operator panel it is possible - with a single interface - to check all cameras and machine status, to run diagnostics, and to create and recall products formats.

 

 

FEEDBACK ON QUALITY AND STATISTICS 

  • Using the VLI not only eliminates the risk of putting non-conforming products on the market but also gathers a great deal of data on the variety of defects at inlet.
  • These data are then used to implement changes to production phases upstream to eliminate them, sparking a virtuous circle that can only benefit safety and production costs.
