A Research Center in Mechanobiology for the Medicine of the Future

The project is managed by the Departments of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Molecular and Translational Medicine.

Combining the biological and engineering sciences for the study of cellular functions, opening the doors to the medicine of the future. This is one of the cornerstones of Mechanobiology and at the same time one of the goals of the new "Interdepartmental Center for International Research in Mechanobiology" promoted by the University of Brescia and supported by Antares Vision and Copan, two international excellences in the pharmaceutical and biomedical sectors.

Copan is the global leader of clinical microbiology and medical preanalytical, sample collection, transport, processing, and preservation systems for a full laboratory automation, supplying bacteriology transport swabs, transfer pipets, calibrated plastic inoculation loops, viral transport systems and flocked swabs.

A Research Center in Mechanobiology

Mechanobiology is an emerging branch of science, combining biology and engineering for the study of cellular functions. The Research Center, the first in Italy specifically dedicated to this discipline, will be located at the Departments of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Molecular and Translational Medicine of the University of Brescia, to promote studies and research with a mechanical-biological approach, and to transform discoveries into biomedical innovations.

The strength of the Center will be interdisciplinarity, thanks to the synergy between the two Departments, which already boast a vast activity of basic and industrial research and technology transfer. The center also has an international vocation, hosting by statute within its Board of Directors an international researcher of clear reputation in the field of mechanobiology.

Fundamental will be the support of Antares Vision and Copan, a global leader in the field of pre-analytics, from the collection of biological samples to the automation of the workflow within the microbiology laboratories.

"We strongly believe in the multidisciplinary approach necessary to solve a problem or to gain valuable knowledge through the exploration of various fields, such as in this case between biology and engineering, between biomedicine and nanoengineering, to understand the still unknown interaction in cells between mechanical and physical processes," says Emidio Zorzella. "The collaboration with Copan and the University of Brescia is part of this approach because we are convinced that a broad, flexible and transversal knowledge is the key to the future”.
